The male counterpart of a succubus is called an incubus. Whatever its name, the essential qualities of it are the same. At its core it is still a demon that tempts men at night. Now that we established what is a succubus, let us move on to explain some facts about it:
Are Succubi Real?
If we are to listen to all legends and beliefs from ancient cultures, then the answer is: yes. However, if we search for answers in the Bible then the story becomes more complicated. The name itself has been associated with demonic presences and ill-intentions for thousands of years. The Bible also talks about demons as very real and powerful beings that can do real harm to people. Whether or not you accept the idea of sexual temptresses, you cannot deny the influence of demons on human culture.
We established what is a succubus. But is it dangerous?
Ultimately, people always feared what they do not understand. For thousands of years they had this innate fear that prevented them from enjoying certain things. As we all know, sexual promiscuity was frowned upon in the Bible and by the church. Also, during the Middle Ages, Christianity categorized any other entity outside of the dogma as being demonic. This is why these creatures now have such a bad reputation and people stay away from them and fear them.
Studying succubus and incubus was considered to be witchcraft and you could be punished by death for it. To make people stay away from these creatures, lots of horrible stories about them started circulating around. Succubus mythology can be a bit dark. At their core, these creatures are not as dangerous as people make them out to be. As long as you do not fear them and know what you want from them, you can keep them under control.
A more scientific explanation to succubus is that men made it up to cover their nightly wet dreams. During that time, any sexual activity that had nothing to do with procreating was a sin. Thus, men made up succubus as a scapegoat. Whatever the reason, they still remain some fascinating creatures.
